History making 2013 Maadi Regatta for Epsom Rowing.

Perfect conditions on Saturday saw a perfect end for both Epsom Rowing's most successful Maadi Cup Regatta ever and our most successful season ever.

Saturday saw the girls contesting a further 4 A Finals and 1 B Final.  In total Epsom Rowing qualified for a total of 8 A Finals and 2 B Finals and 3 D Finals over the course of the 2013 Maadi Cup regatta, this is the most ever achieved at National Championships and is an amazing way  to round out our 25th Anniversary as a Club.

While the U17  of  Annabel Childs, Sarah L'Amie, Phoebe Allen, Madeline Allen, Rosie Byrnes, Briony Fanslow, Chanelle Jones, Charlotte Riley + Natasha Krofcheck (cox) finished 8th  in the opening A Final of Saturday this is still a hugely impressive performance considering that 6 of the crew are first season novices.  This was one of 2 eights boats that Epsom Rowing qualified into National Championship A Finals.

In the Under 18 Lightweight Double Sculls A Final Sarah and Lucy again tussled with the crack crew from Dunedin's Kavanagh College, with both these crews clearing away from the rest of field by midway.  Again the McBride/Duggan combination prevailed with Epsom picking up its 3rd Silver medal of the Regatta.

Our second 8 combination of the day comprising Charlotte Spence, Isla Peachey, Aimee Cable, Victoria Watt, Briana Siteine, Taryn Morgan, Monique Waller, Hannah Knight + Alexandra Littlewood (cox) hit the water in the U15 8 A Final race as North Island Champions, contesting a final alongside traditional powerhouse schools such as a Waikato Diocesan, Rangi Ruru and St Margarets. In a excellent race for U15 rowers  Epsom held its own and then kept pace with leading crews to ease away from the field and finish in the Bronze medal position behind Waikato Diocesan and St Margarets.
History made again as this is the first 8’s boat from Epsom Rowing to ever podium at the National Championships and seeing those rowers up there bought a smile and possibly a tear from some of the many assembled current and past Epsom Rowing community.

Lexi Kerr and Sarah Smith lined up next in the U17 2X A Final and took an early leading position along with Western Heights from Rotorua and Nga Tawa of Wellington.  By the 500 m they had eased away and controlled the race superbly from there to win by over a length.
A fantastic  result for both girls  in their last race in Epsom Colours  and in doing so made Maadi Regatta history  by becoming the only crew ever to have won the same event class (Girls 2X) in 3 successive years at each age level  (U15, U16 and U17).

The final event of the day for Epsom Rowing saw our crew of Raina Marshall, Sarah L'Amie, Annabel Childs, Charlotte Riley + Kate Bolland (cox) hold off Rangi Ruru to finish an excellent 3rd in the B Final of the Novice U18 4+.

Overall Epsom Girls Grammar Rowing Club finished as the 6th best school and the top performing Auckland region school at the 2013 National Secondary School Championships - Maadi Cup Regatta.
